If you think digging up interviews and finding information for an in-depth news story is easy, listen to IowaWatch summer 2018 reporting interns Lily Bohlke and Matthew McDermott.

Bohlke, of Grinnell College and McDermott, of Cornell College, and both in their senior years in 2018-19, shared with IowaWatch’s executive director and editor Lyle Muller at the end of their internships what they learned about journalism and capstone reporting projects on which they worked.

The result is this podcast that takes you behind the scenes for a revealing look at what journalism training at the Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-IowaWatch is like.

McDermott’s project focused on the seemingly inability of Iowans to have a civil conversation about controversial political matters. Here is a link to his story.

Bohlke’s story about migrant farm worker health is in the editing and preparation stage. We’ll put a link here when it is published in August 2018. Here is a link to an interview she did during her internship with Des Moines Register investigative journalist Clark Kauffman about Kauffman’s approach to a big story.

The Iowa Center for Public Affairs Journalism-IowaWatch is an independent, 501(c)(3) non-profit program that does investigative and community affairs journalism as a public service in collaboration with other media, and trains college student journalists to do this work at a high level. It is a member of the Institute for Nonprofit News. Find out more at IowaWatch.org/.
