Iowa serves an important purpose in the presidential selection process — weeding out candidates who don’t have a chance of winning, Cary Covington, a University of Iowa associate professor of political science, said.

“It’s not as sexy of a role as being the one who does the choosing but its an important first step,” he said.

It’s been a month since Iowans caucused. How do Iowa’s results look now that more than a quarter of the country has indicated its presidential preference?
