The association’s awards are given to first and second books by authors who display unusual promise, the association said.

Mullenbach’s weekly feature about events in Iowa history, “Iowa Stories,” appears at IowaWatch.org each Saturday.

“The Industrial Revolution for Kids,” published in 2014 by Chicago Review Press, tells children about important places during the industrial revolution.

Mullenbach, of Panora, Iowa, is a former history teacher, public television project manager and social studies consultant. The International Literacy Association announced this year’s winners on July 21 at its 2015 conference in St. Louis.
