Foodborne illness cost more than $15.6 billion a year in medical expenses and lost productivity and wages among other direct and indirect costs, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

An estimated 3,000 people die from food poisoning annually, which is caused by bacteria, parasites or viruses.

The graphic below shows some of the most common and costliest illnesses annually, according to updated cost estimates by the U.S. Department of Agriculture released in late January.
