The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service is tasked with overseeing the introduction of new genetically engineered crops.

Companies and institutions that seek to grow new GMO varieties commercially need to first secure USDA approval through a formal petition process. The Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service has kept track of those petitions since the early 1990s.
